The Little Jamaica Bench Competition winner,
for & with Engage-Design-Build
done with Danilo Blagojevic, as MIIICE
under prof. Otto Ojo, Michael Piper.

Engage-Design-Build is an experiential learning program, which hosted a competition in winter of 2023, asking for a bench design for the Eglinton West strip, a commercial corridor referred to as Little Jamaica.

Working with Danilo Blagojevic, we proposed and constructed, out of cedar, an angled bench. By pointing the knees of friends, family, workers on break, tourists, and strangers together, the community is invited to gather.  The missing communal connection in the strip of Eglinton West is to be rectified in small-scale interventions creating nooks and alcoves. Our bench aims to be one such alcove through the central “kite piece”, which allows for the seating to implement a non-90 degree angle.

The design is imbued with lessons of basic woodworking principles, as the bench was originally intended to be built by Toronto District School Board students. EDB continues to collaborate with the local high school, and the prototype design has a potential future in the school’s shop class.

Exhibited in  BUILDING PLACE!  in summer 2023.
